Best Practices for Growing the Best Plant

Cannabis clones are very sensitive in the early stages and special care is needed to make sure they grow into a healthy plant, bulging with sweet, sticky buds. See the links below this info for a complete list of deep dives for growing the best plants possible.

Steps for getting your TOKYO STARFISH clone started in an optimal, healthy environment:

Step 1:

Get your clone home ASAP. Do not leave your clone in your car! Temps that are too cold or too hot for an extended period of time will kill your new baby girl.

Step 2

Put on your gardening gloves (figuratively or literally) — your clone will need to be transplanted into its future home ASAP. That probably means soil, rockwool or other hydroponic medium. We’ll assume you’re growing in soil, and recommend talking to our friends at Green Leaf Garden Center in Bend (show them your TOKYO clone receipt and get 10% off your purchase at Green Leaf) to get their recommendations for your specific environment you’ll be growing in.

Once you get your preferred medium material back home, add your medium into a clean, one-gallon pot (again, assuming growing in soil).

Step 3

Transplant your clone, burying it so the top of the original soil/root ball rests just above the new buried soil line. After your clone has been transplanted, make sure that you are providing it with at least 16-18 hours of light. Remember your clone has been under 18 hours of low intensity LED light in our TOKYO STARFISH stores. If you want your clone to grow properly without unnecessary stress, you will have to wean it off of the artificial light environment it has been living in, and acclimate it to the outdoors.

Step 4

Getting your plant acclimated to the outdoors may take a little bit of work and attention. This process is called “hardening-off” your clone. We recommend waiting for a couple days after your initial transplant for a nice, sunny day when the temperatures are mild/warm. That morning, put your plant out in an area of partial shade so that it starts to get used to the sun, but is shaded enough that the sun will not burn the plant. Bring the plant back into an area with supplemental light before dark, so that your plant doesn’t get more than ten hours of darkness or it will try to flower. Marijuana plants are photosensitive, so they will start to flower if they receive less than 14 hours of sunlight. If you notice your plant’s leaves drooping or curling, get it into the shade immediately.

Step 5

After a week, to a week and a half of the hardening-off process (placed outside during day & brought back in during evenings), you can try putting your clone out into full light. It is recommended to do this on a day when you are home to watch for any signs of heat shock. If the leaves of your clone begin to droop and curl, just bring it back to a shady area and try again another day. For Central Oregon we recommend to finish the hardening-off process 1-2 weeks before your new clone lands in it’s final destination.

How do you know when your plant needs to be watered?

Some indicators would be the leaves curling down or drooping, and, overall, looking generally unhappy. Usually a plant that is full of water is lively looking, standing up straight and remaining upright/strong with a breeze. A dehydrated plant will appear wilted and floppy. Another thing to look for would be the soil pulling away from the side of the pot if the soil is not properly hydrated. On the other hand, if you are overwatering your plant, the leaves will take on a shade of yellow and be a bit droopy. A brown and rotting stem at the soil line is another indication of overwatering. Typically, in a one gallon pot placed in partial shade, you should be able to water your cannabis plant once in the morning and, depending on the heat of the day if over 90 degrees, just a little splash more before the sun goes down.
